POEMS

PRAYER UNDER AFFLICTION.

1802.

ALMIGHTY Pow'r, who wings the storm,
And calms the raging wind,
Restore health to my wasted form,
And tranquilize my mind.

For ah ! how poignant is the grief
Which self misconduct brings,
When racking pains find no relief,
And injur'd conscience stings.

Let penitence forgiveness plead,
Hear lenient Mercy's claims ;
Thy justice let be satisfied,
And blotted out my crimes.

But should thy sacred law of Right,
Seek life, a sacrifice,
O ! haste that awful, solemn night,
When death shall veil mine eyes.
